What is MEPCO

MEPCO (Multan Electric Power Company) is an electricity distribution company (DISCO) in Pakistan. It is responsible for the supply and billing of electricity in 13 districts of the South Punjab region of Pakistan. These 13 districts are:

MEPCO generates electricity from water (hydro-electric power), and supplies it to 8915282 electricity consumers in South Punjab. 

In addition to the supply and billing of electricity, MEPCO is responsible for maintaining its infrastructure which includes 159 grid stations, 1945 feeders, 205000+ transformers, and 128239km HT/LT lines.

History of MEPCO

The history of MEPCO roots back to the British India era when this electricity distribution company was established in 1922, in the Multan region under the name Multan Power Supply Company.

Nationalization of Multan Power Supply Company

After the independence of Pakistan in 1947, the electricity power sector of Pakistan came under government control. And in 1972, the Multan Power Supply Company was nationalized, and it came under a centralized federal electricity system called WAPDA (Water and Power Development Authority).

After nationalization, the Multan Power Supply Company became the Multan Electricity Area Board (MAEB). This board operated under WAPDA, and managed the operations like distribution, supply, and billing of electricity and maintenance of electrical infrastructure in this Multan region.

Establishment of MEPCO (Multan Electric Power Company)

In the 1990s, Pakistan initiated power sector reforms to improve the electricity distribution and billing system in Pakistan. As Part of these reforms Multan Electric Power Company was established as a public limited company on May 14, 1998.

After its formation, MEPCO took over the assets, liabilities, operations and infrastructure of the former Multan Area Electricity Board, and started its operations. From the 1990s to this day, MEPCO is constantly evolving to provide electricity consumers of South Punjab with the best services.

Modernization of MEPCO

From 2000 to onward, MEPCO has modernized its operations by allowing its electricity consumers to check MEPCO online Bill. Moreover MEPCO has digitalized its operations by introducing apps like MEPCO Smart App and MEPCO Light.

Through these apps, the MEPCO consumers will be able to submit their applications for MEPCO new connections, track new connection applications, check bills, submit complaints, track complaints, change meter name, tariff category and load etc.
